march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

its been a while since we have seen a release from dfrnt for on the edge, but im proud to announce, the wait is finally over! this ep provides us with an abundance of different flavours, but still retains the genius sound that is dfrnt at the very core of every tune. let me first draw to your attention to >the big freeze<. its a drum and bass track that has been moulded like a true pro. it sounds like dfrnt has been producing d+b for a long time with the finishes on this track, but believe its one of his earlier efforts. its a refreshing bpm for his take on electronic music and hope to hear more of the same from dfrnt soon. then dfrnt shows us what he is all about when he goes all out 4x4. a dirty, gritty techno roller (with a skip) that will blow your socks off! love the production on this one. then we have >monday morning<. this does exactly what it says on the tin, just the type of tune you need to bring you down after a heavy weekend. as though that wasnt enough, there is a 170 remix from man of the moment, indigo! support comes from: hatti vatti, synkro, versa, mary ann hobbs, kissy sell out, fused forces, loxy, dj rum, 501 and truth to name a few.

the title track on tychos long-awaited dive lp is just that � a ripple effect record that sounds like three songs in one, as if sound/graphic designer scott hansen just discovered progrock and decided to apply its winding passages to his own singular blend of sinewy synths and bleached beats. its also the first tycho song to feature a prominent guest musician, guitarist zac brown, in this case, who paints outside the lines of hansens halcyon hooks with restless rhythms and monorail-like riffs. the >dive< single fleshes things out even further, as keep shelly in athens and memoryhouse � both rising underground artists in their own right � cut hansens cloud-scraping composition in half and slow his cruise control chords down to a crawl. the misty vocal melodies are still there, but they are now floating through an embryonic assembly of jittery cicadas, rusty gears, and lean loops that are both welcoming and a bit woozy. the sonic equivalent of staring at the sun for too long, really, or two sides of the same cracked mirror.

in 2006, hip-hop was turned on its head by the arrival of chicagos kenny dennis, a proudly married, mustachioed and middle-aged rapper repping no-nonsense lyrics and a salt-of-the-earth swagger. this unlikely hero delivered a handful of classics via the album, dennehy, and then disappeared. but in 2011, kennys cult of fans were given a gift: the long-lost 1993 lp theres a situation on the homefront from his theretofore unheard boom-bap crew tha grimm teachaz. (kenny was then known as kdz, tha killa deacon. the group was briefly signed to jive records.) as it turned out, that gift was twofold. inspired by the anticon-backed release of that unearthed gem, kenny has teamed up with producers jel and odd nosdam to make a brand new record, a reintroduction of sorts, dubbed the kenny dennis ep.

vessel returns to left_blank with 3 tracks of mind bending house & techno for the labels 5th release. after inaugurating the label almost a year ago with his critically acclaimed nylon sunset ep, vessel aka sebastian gainsborough went on to release a sold out split cassette with fellow left_blanker el kid, and a stunning digital only set for a future without. as a result of this the all conquering tri angle records snapped him up in early 2012 to release his debut album. this eps title track standard spans the length of the a-side: 5 minutes of low-slung, smacked out death disco, coming over like john carpenter meets newworldaquarium, pure valium vibes. merge on the b-side is positively sprightly in comparison, all rattling and metallic before a drop at the halfway point brings a welcome dose of detroit influenced machine funk. zero closes the ep in abstraction, whirring and stumbling along while showcasing sebs intricate sound design, a teasing glimpse at what is in store for his album later in the year.

all nite ep is the young mancunian waltons second set on hyperdub, after his very well received walton ep debut for the label in 2011. title cut >all nite< kicks it off with warm plucked strings, diva moans and lazer-like synths stretched to the point of anticipation over cracking grime handclaps and bass drums, until the track drops into a blocky bass line playing hide and seek with low arpeggios that spiral in and out of the mix, over a giant pounding metallic kick drum before layering on the warmth again. the whole track plays with a fine balance between warm, disco-like lushness and exuberant roughness. >mallet< is driving and darker, building detuned, bell-like tones over a 4/4 beat accented by breaks and fills and gaps, dropping into a big bass line and syncopations that disrupt the beat and bring the drama. >kush< is different again, taking the pace down with low end, synth hip hop with glassy chords, running over woozy pitch shifting rhodes chords fed through a layer of crackly gauze.

our second vinyl release 2012 introduces a new series, the bias jams, on ilian tape. we start off with a compilation of 4 tracks from japan, serbia, argentina and italy. after some internal investigations we found out that imugem orihasam is not only a japanese shaolin, but also a yoga guru. his bias cut sounds like an instruction for a deep meditation in a forest. we chose a forest, because forests need to be saved. too many black puffs of vapour are killing them at the moment. our late riser regen probably didnt had that a mind, but we declare him to be an environmental activist from now on. now how should we include paper tape in this story � had a look online and found the term perforated paper tape. pretty interesting stuff, it was one of the first methods for data storage. ok are you guys joking? orbital? there is no way to write a good story with those track names. >an atomic orbital is a mathematical function that describes the wave-like behavior of either one electron or a pair of electrons in an atom<. yeah right! well in fact its enough to know that the bias jams series will feature some heavy bomboclaat bias cuts from various artists! cheers

ly sander & michael j. collins join forces to bring you raoul06 via raoul, a deep, soothing ep. no response is a laid back and haunting piece, featuring warm bass and soaring pads. percussion is kept simple here, with the focus on the bass groove and introspective wording. home listening and chill out sessions arent complete without this air-y number. to bring it up a bit, the >deep space orchestra remix< lays a beat and a groove under the track and takes us to galactic depths. a cool energy is spread throughout and saucy percussion takes the levels higher. this is a late night dance track that gives goose bumps. it will certainly help to reconnect senses in the early morning. >russian roulette< displays nice use of delay and relaxed percussion. this hasnt got the boom of techno, but it does have the space-y synths and ambience to bring you up to your feet. when everything is in place, it feels right an afterparty delight.

>roseland nyc< was a one night stand of sorts at the new york city roseland ballroom, where geoff barrow, adrian utley and beth gibbons were joined by the 35-piece new york philharmonic orchestra. these new arrangements gave a new sense of dramatic tension, and in the process they created one of the most breathtaking albums of the genre.
